Who was petrified by the Basilisk?
The Basilisk petrified 6 different people/things in the Chamber of Secrets book. They are Colin Creevey, Justin Finch-Fletchley, Nearly Headless Nick (the Gryffindor ghost), Hermione, Penelope Clearwater (5th year Ravenclaw student), and Mrs Norris (Filch’s cat).
Why were they only petrified by the Basilisk and not killed?
The Basilisk has a murderous stare. So looking it in the eye will kill you. Luckily, the people and things at Hogwarts were only petrified and not killed because they saw the Basilisk but they did not look it directly in the eye.
- Colin Creevey saw the Basilisk through his camera
- Justin Finch-Fletchley saw the Basilisk through the hazy apparition of the ghost of Nearly Headless Nick
- Nearly Headless Nick DID look directly at the Basilisk but he was already dead so it couldn’t kill him again
- Hermione and Penelope Clearwater saw the Basilisk through the reflection in a mirror
- Mrs Norris the cat saw the Basilisk in the reflection of a pool of water that covered the floor she was standing on
In the Harry Potter stories, what makes a Mandrake dangerous?
In the Harry Potter books they claim these weird plants – whose roots look like babies – are dangerous because the Mandrake cry or Mandrake scream of a full-grown Mandrake is fatal if you hear it. That is why in the stories Professor Sprout makes sure that her students wear earmuffs when handling them.
Professor Sprout says that the cry of a seedling Mandrake won’t kill you but it’ll knock you out for several hours.
Why was Harry Potter able to open the Chamber of Secrets if only the heir to Salazar Slytherin was supposed to be able to open it?
Harry Potter was able to open the Chamber of Secrets, not because he is the heir to Slytherin, but because he is able to speak Parseltongue.
